Friday Rock Out - Van Halen "Panama"

A little cock rock anthem never hurt anyone on the cusp of a weekend, did it?

It's finally Friday, and moreover, it's finally blistering hot outside. It seems like we've been waiting for Summer to arrive forever, and now that it's here, it's almost over.

Take our advice: Get out, and enjoy this. Get yourself some much-deserved vitamin D. Get a bit of colour into those pasty white legs of yours. Go work yourself into a healthy schvitz.

Boy-o's, enjoy the looks of the ladies breaking out their thinnest, shortest and most revealing summer duds, and ladies...well...do whatever it is that you do when you're feeling vaguely lecherous.

Enjoy your weekend. The Ack is in.

You make listening to Van Halen sound like a guilty pleasure. These guys completely innovated rock n roll. Always mentioned in the top 5 rock bands of all time.

I think you're a little too self conscious. "1984"-era VH is not a guilty pleasure at all. They were at their absolute peak...

Good point on guilty pleasure, Tao. Hard to believe, but these guys were once as universally loved as U2 was when they released Actung Baby.

OK, those of use who are over 30 bring Van Halen, U2, the Police, Dr. Dre, and Peter Gabriel to the table. (And I could easily go on and on) What do the under 30s have? Come on...I an working on a thesis here.

uhh, Van Halen is most definitely a guilty pleasure. Not to mention a homo erotic one if one is watching the video. 1984 was the attempt at a cash grab and every song on that album is pure pop rock, some of it bordering on what would be a great soundtrack for a step class or some other exercise class attended by folks wearing spandex etc. Nothing wrong with any of the above, and I take nothing away from their accomplishments and musical ability, but let's not lump them into some mythical category here...

Oh yeah, baseball, Go Jays!

Under 30s? How about Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Green Day, Metallica, Oasis, the Offspring, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Weezer, to name a few.

Obviously not everyone loves these bands and they're not all held in the same regard as some of the 30+ bands named, but I bet there were plenty of Van Halen detractors 25 years ago.

I'll admit I didn't define my terms very well, Colin, but I don't think there's a single person under 35 in any of the bands you mentioned. Metallica's Ride the Lightning, for example, was released in 1984.
